On February 26, Mt. Vernon’s Dance Team placed their way to state at the Regional Championship. They earned 3rd place in their jazz routine, and 2nd place in both their hip-hop and pom routine.
Senior Alyjah Duff performed a solo piece and he too advanced to state. His routine was a trick filled hip-hop routine to the “Hit That Mario Jersey Club Remix.” Alyjah then competed in the State competition on Friday, March 11 at New Castle High School.
He placed 5th at State, but his dance career will not end there. He plans to attend Alabama State University in the Fall to study dance and communications. Before college, he will be teaching dance at the National Dance Alliance camp in the summer. He will be coaching girls and boys of all ages in Pom, Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Kick routines.
“We’ve all worked really hard and we were nervously excited for state,” said Duff.
The team of sixteen competed at state on Saturday, March 12, at New Castle, they received 5th in pom, 4th in hip-hop, and 3rd in jazz. Congratulations to the entire team on their great season.
Duff said, “To be a good dancer, you don’t have to be super flexible or necessarily have the skill, I mean it helps, but the key to becoming a good or even great dancer is to know your body.”
Coach Ellen Jones, and the whole team, encourage everyone to come tryout on the week of April 12 for the 2016-2017 MVHS Dance Team.
