MV falls after hard-fought battle

Story by: Blake Slunaker

The Mt. Vernon boy’s tennis team recently wrapped up their season at the sectional final on October 1.

The boys finished their regular season 13-4 and faced a decent 12-12 Greenfield Central team in the first round. They had tough matchups and were ultimately tied 2-2 before heading into the decisive match. Brendon Ware won his match in the second set winning 6-4 which earned the Marauders the win over Greenfield 3-2.

The Marauders win over Greenfield would then set up a formidable match up in the championship against the 19-1 New Pal Dragons. Mt. Vernon has been eliminated in sectionals by the Dragons the past three years. Unfortunately, this year was no different as the Marauders fell to the Dragons 3-2.

“Overall I think we had a pretty good season, but it just hurts to lose to our rival again and have our season cut short,” said Ryan Beck, 11.

The good news for the Marauders is that they have a pretty young team. They will only lose three seniors next year and will return a team ready to compete.
